FUN FACT! Hera refused to marry Zeus for three hundred years before finally saying yes.
Jason was stunned and bowed down. Thank you. You are the most magnificent goddess. Both happy, the two parted, and Jason continued to Iolcos.
When he arrived in the kingdom, he went straight to the cityâs center. He ran into his uncle, King Pelias. When Pelias saw that Jason had only one sandal on, he knew who he was. Years earlier, Pelias received a fortune-telling from an oracle who predicted that a young man wearing only one sandal would take his throne.
Since then, Pelias had thought about what he would do when the one-sandaled man showed up. Now that the moment had finally arrived, Pelias knew what to do. He smiled wickedly at Jason and said, I know who you are, nephew, and I know why youâre here. I will give you my throne peacefully, but first you need to achieve something worthy of its glory in exchange. You must bring me the great Golden Fleece.
The Golden Fleece was the coat of a magical ram that saved two children from Iolcos years ago. They sacrificed the ram to the gods, and its fleece was now in the kingdom of Colchis (KOL-kuhs), kept as a prize. It hung over a tree in their forest and was protected by dragons. Pelias wanted the fleece returned to Iolcos, but he also hoped Jason wouldnât survive the journey.
Jason didnât want to start a war with his uncle, and he liked the sound of an adventure. Besides, he knew he had Heraâs favor. So he agreed to Peliasâ challenge.
To get to Colchis, Jason would have to sail across the seas. So he began to build a great ship. Jason named his boat the Argo. As he worked, news about Jasonâs quest spread throughout Greece, and many young heroes wanted to join him. By the time the Argo was ready to set sail, Jason had many determined crewmates: the famous Heracles, strongest mortal on earth; Peleus (pee-LAY-uss), the warrior; the twins Castor and Pollux, a famous horse tamer and boxer; Zetes (ZEE-tees) and Calais (cah-LAY), the sons of the north wind; and Orpheus, the master musician. They called themselves the Argonauts.
